Mother’s Day looks a little different once the kids are grown.
It may just look more like a phone call, lunch out, or brunch at home if everyone happens to be nearby.
And if I’m making brunch, I want it to feel nice without spending the entire morning making it feel nice.
So this one is simple on purpose: a make-ahead quiche, a mimosa bar, yogurt parfaits, and a table that looks pulled together without requiring a floral-design certificate.
Because whoever is hosting Mother’s Day should probably get to enjoy it too.
The Quiche Does Most of the Work
This is exactly why I love quiche for brunch.
You can make it ahead, warm it up, put it on the table, and suddenly it looks like you had a plan all along.
Add fruit, a simple salad, or whatever else is easy. Done.
My Crustless Quiche is especially good for this because it’s simple, adaptable, and doesn’t require wrestling with pastry.
Who Can Resist a Mimosa Bar?
Not me.
Put out a chilled bottle of sparkling wine, a carafe of orange juice, and a few glasses. Add grapefruit juice or something berry-ish if you have it.
Then let everyone make their own.
Fruit garnish if you feel like it. No garnish if you don’t.
Either way, the mimosas will be just fine — and you get to sit down too.
Yogurt Parfaits: Because Something Should Look Healthy
A yogurt parfait does a remarkable job of making brunch look respectable.
Set out yogurt, berries, and granola, step back, and let everyone build their own.
Easy, pretty, and nobody has to ask where anything goes.
If you want something with a bit less sugar, my Grainless Granola works beautifully here.
The Setup
Most of the time, Johnny B handles the outside setup, but he considers using napkin rings a level of planning no reasonable person should be expected to undertake.
So when I want the table to look really pretty — and maybe a little girly — I take over.
Nothing complicated. A few flowers, nice napkins, the glasses I like, and whatever serving pieces happen to make the cut.
That’s usually plenty.
These are a few of my favorites: linen napkins, a pretty tray, and wooden napkin rings.
The kids have their own families now. And we celebrate them every day — brunch is just the excuse.
Because celebrating the mothers in our lives
…is for the Birds
